St. Gotthard - Highway Tunnel - Lot 243 - North Access Tunnel
Tunnel
Work description
CSC Costruzioni (Webuild Group) has completed excavation of the nearly 4km northern access tunnel to the Gotthard Motorway Tunnel (Lot 243), the highway system that will help develop sustainable mobility in the heart of the Alps.
More than 100 employees were involved in the execution of the activities, which started in spring 2021. An open TBM, “Carla,” with a diameter of 7m, was used to excavate the tunnel. II work was carried out in a consortium by CSC Costruzioni (with a 40 percent share) together with Implenia (leader with 40 percent) and Frutiger (20 percent).
The contract, awarded for about CHF 87 million (about 80 million euros), is being carried out on behalf of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). The primary objective of the o tunnel excavated is to reach a fault zone, to excavate a cavern and thus allow the safe passage of the TBM that is excavating the main tunnel (part of another lot).
Lot 243 also included the construction of various excavations serving the main tunnel of the Second Gotthard Tunnel, carried out by the traditional method (using explosives), with a total length of about 750m. In total, more than 233,000m3 of rock was excavated and 2.8km of piles were driven in.
With a record of more than 300 kilometers of tunnels excavated in 60 years, CSC Construzioni is strengthening its position as a major player in underground works, offering safe, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation services.
