Gotthard Base Tunnel: Ten Years of an Infrastructure That Transformed European Mobility

09/06/2026

On 1 June 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel entered into service, marking a turning point in European rail transport and redefining connections across the Alps.

At 57 kilometres in length, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in the world and stands as one of the most significant infrastructure projects delivered in Europe in recent decades.

CSC Costruzioni and Webuild Group played a key role in the construction of this strategic asset, contributing to the works on the Bodio–Faido section and to the development of the related infrastructure connected to the base tunnel.

The Group’s commitment to strengthening the Alpine rail corridor continued in the following years. In 2023, CSC Costruzioni completed the excavation of approximately 4 kilometres of Lot H243, relating to the northern access tunnel of the second Gotthard tunnel, further reinforcing its contribution to the development of Switzerland’s railway infrastructure.

CSC Costruzioni also contributed to the construction of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, a fundamental component in completing the new north–south rail corridor through the Alps.

Today, nearly 6 million passengers travel through the Gotthard Base Tunnel every year. The tunnel has become a key infrastructure asset for European mobility, helping make passenger and freight transport between Switzerland and Italy faster, more efficient and more sustainable.

Ten years after its inauguration, the Gotthard Base Tunnel remains a symbol of engineering excellence and a tangible demonstration of the construction industry's ability to deliver infrastructure that creates long-term value for communities, economies and future generations.
