More Efficient Mobility in Ticino: Works Progress on the Second Track Between Contone and Magadino

05/06/2026

The doubling of the Contone–Ponte Ticino railway section is progressing in Ticino, representing a strategic milestone in the enhancement of regional mobility. CSC Costruzioni (part of the Webuild Group), together with Matteo Muttoni Costruzioni SA within the Consorzio Monda, has completed the launching of the first monolith beneath the operational railway line, a highly complex phase carried out without interrupting railway traffic.

The project forms part of a broader plan to strengthen the capacity of the regional rail network and aims to improve service reliability, operational safety, and the sustainability of transportation in a key area for mobility in the Canton of Ticino.

A Strategic Infrastructure for Regional Mobility

The project includes the construction of a second railway track through the widening of the existing embankment and the construction of the civil works required to upgrade the railway systems. At the same time, a new road underpass is being built in the Alla Monda area to replace two existing level crossings, providing direct benefits in terms of safety and traffic flow on the local road network.

Additional works include a new hydraulic crossing, a dedicated wildlife passage for small fauna, and the relocation of the CDV collector, all contributing to better integration of the infrastructure within its environmental and territorial context.

Completion of the First Monolith Launch Beneath the Railway Embankments

A particularly significant technical milestone was achieved in recent weeks with the completion of the launch of the first prefabricated monolith beneath the railway embankments. The operation was carried out without disrupting rail traffic thanks to the installation of two temporary bridges, a solution that ensured service continuity during this highly complex construction phase. 🏗️

The launch of the second monolith is scheduled for mid-May 2026 and will mark a further step toward the completion of the project.

Project Figures and Construction Impact

The project is also notable for the scale of the works currently underway:

  • 45,340 cubic metres of excavation;
  • 70,900 metres of jet grouting;
  • 3,080 metres of injections through sleeve pipes;
  • 21,230 square metres of sheet piling;
  • 6,381 cubic metres of cast-in-place concrete;
  • 1,000 metres of micropiles.

Once completed, the doubling of the railway section will increase line capacity, reduce waiting times, and improve service regularity, contributing to the development of a more efficient and sustainable mobility system throughout the Canton of Ticino.
