Ventilation plant in Faido

The building at the portal of Faido is positioned against the rock wall at the head of the descent that has access to the Gotthard Base Tunnel. It consists of the railway technology building and the ventilation plant, built of reinforced concrete with architectural forms.

The railway technology building has a length of 88 m, a width of 21 m and a height of the visible part of the facade of 5.40 m. The ventilation plant has a maximum height above ground of 27.30 m. To the west of the building is located the railways' electrical substation that ensures the supply of traction power in the base tunnel.

The landscaping and environmental arrangement is the result of coordination among specialists. The forecourt in front of the building was landscaped by laying a layer of crushed material from the tunnel excavation and planting 12 birch trees in a geometric grid. Outside the asphalt surfaces of access to the building, the area was arranged and seeded as a skinny lawn.
