Increasing the capacity of the SBB Chiasso station.
Civil engineering
Work description
From 2017 to 2021, CSC Costruzioni carried out work on behalf of the SBB to increase capacity at Chiasso station. Chiasso International Station plays a central role in both the handling of freight traffic into and out of Switzerland and in the handling of travelers for regional and long-distance traffic. The opening of the new transalpine crossings (Gotthard Base Tunnel and Monte Ceneri) requires increased capacity at the Chiasso Viaggiatori facilities.
The construction of the new link between Mendrisio and Varese (FMV) will also result in increased traffic at the Chiasso station. With the use of new rolling stock, it is necessary to adapt the railway infrastructure to the new demands being created.
In this regard, the “ACE Chiasso and capacity increase” project includes a series of renovations and modifications to the existing facility to meet the new requirements. Subject of the contract are major works such as sidewalk elevations, new shelters, the Customs building from scratch, renovation of access ramps and stairs as well as various other works.
