About Alessandra

With a background in building engineering, my career path led me to explore the field of civil engineering, particularly the tunnel sector, which has always fascinated me.

I joined CSC Costruzioni (Webuild Group) as a technician in the tender office before being promoted to bid coordinator for civil works and tunnels. Today, I serve as Head of the Technical Office and QHSE Department, a role that has also introduced me to the dynamic world of data centers.

CSC Costruzioni specializes in multiple sectors, including civil works, tunnels, general contracting, and data centers. As Head of the Technical Department, I must have a solid understanding of both the technical and business aspects of these fields, ensuring excellence in execution and innovation.

The Role of Science in Infrastructure and Data Centers

Science is at the heart of the infrastructure and data center sectors. From advanced materials engineering to cutting-edge sustainability initiatives, scientific innovation is crucial to improving efficiency, safety, and environmental impact. The construction industry increasingly relies on fields such as structural engineering, geotechnics, and data analytics to optimize project design and execution.

At CSC Costruzioni and Webuild, we integrate scientific research into our projects, leveraging new technologies such as AI-driven predictive maintenance, smart energy management, and sustainable construction materials. These advancements not only improve project efficiency but also contribute to a more sustainable future.

Women in science play a fundamental role in these innovations, bringing diverse perspectives that drive creativity and problem-solving. Encouraging more women to enter STEM fields will only strengthen the industry’s ability to tackle complex challenges.

How Can We Attract More Women to the Data Center Construction Industry?

Encouraging more women to enter this field is a challenge, but my personal experience offers some insights. Coming from a different background, I was initially both skeptical and curious about the data center sector. However, I quickly realized its immense potential and fast-paced evolution, which made it an exciting career choice for me.

One crucial factor is training. The data center industry spans various disciplines, including technical expertise, sustainability, and business strategy. There are many opportunities to explore and develop, making it a highly engaging field.

As a woman, I see no barriers—only opportunities. This industry is evolving, and women have a vital role to play in shaping its future.

How Does CSC Costruzioni Promote Women in Science and Construction?

CSC Costruzioni and Webuild are committed to empowering women in the infrastructure sector. A key initiative has been increasing female representation in leadership pipelines, with 25% of succession planning roles now allocated to women.

At CSC Costruzioni, women have equal career opportunities as men. We have the freedom to take on major projects, voice our ideas, and contribute to strategic decisions. I am a member of the Board Direction, and several women lead key departments.

Webuild has also launched multiple initiatives aimed at supporting women in science and engineering. These include mentorship programs, partnerships with universities to encourage young women in STEM, and internal training programs designed to develop leadership skills among female professionals.

Beyond gender diversity, Webuild also values cultural and generational diversity. Approximately 40% of our workforce is under 35, and over 120 nationalities are represented within our teams. This inclusive, multicultural approach fosters innovation and long-term growth.

Why is the Data Center Market a Strategic Focus for CSC Costruzioni?

CSC Costruzioni recognizes that data centers are a fundamental part of the future. In today’s digital world, data is the backbone of every industry, requiring secure and reliable storage solutions.

To address this growing need, CSC Costruzioni is actively engaged in data center construction. We are currently building a major data center in Gland for a leading international company and are set up to begin two more projects in Zurich. With our expertise in infrastructure, we see this complex and rapidly expanding sector as a natural fit for our capabilities.

While data center development is a global trend, Switzerland has become a key hub, alongside other developed markets. Building on CSC Costruzioni’s experience, Webuild has initiated strategic investments in the sector, starting in Italy and expanding worldwide.

What Does the Future Hold for the Data Center Market?

The demand for digital services has surged over the past 10–15 years, and this trend will only accelerate. Technologies such as AI, extended reality, autonomous vehicles, and advanced air mobility will drive exponential growth in data consumption.

In Europe, major metropolitan areas like Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, and Paris (FLAP markets) continue to experience high demand, with expansion also happening in Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Greece, and the Nordics. In the Asia-Pacific region, China, India, Australia, Japan, and Singapore are key growth markets.

Specifically in Italy, the data center market—currently experiencing steady growth—is expected to surge post-2028, driven by AI adoption. In Milan alone, the data center compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is projected to exceed 30%, surpassing the European average. Growth is inevitable, and it will be rapid.

Why is Industry-Specific Training Crucial for Data Center Construction Teams?

Specialized training in project management, mechanical systems, and electrical systems is essential for professionals in the data center construction industry. These facilities are highly complex, requiring seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and IT components.

Proper training ensures that teams execute projects efficiently and avoid costly errors. It also enhances compliance with strict safety, energy efficiency, and environmental standards. Staying updated on the latest advancements, such as cutting-edge cooling solutions and next-generation electrical systems, is critical in this evolving industry. Investing in continuous learning and upskilling is key to ensuring the long-term success of this sector.

Women have a significant role to play in the evolution of science, engineering, and technology. At CSC Costruzioni, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment where talent, innovation, and expertise drive progress for all.
